How It All Began

Once upon a time two gentlemen named Ben Penrod and Steve Anderson (founder and owner of Third Eye Comics) decided to try running a con of their own. They started Annapolis Comic-Con in Annapolis, Maryland, which is still going strong after more than 11 years! The dynamic duo had so much fun they decided to try running a larger con in Washington, DC… and thus Awesome Con was born! Debuting on April 20, 2013 in the East Salon of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Awesome Con year one welcomed 7,100 excited fans!

LeftField Media acquired Awesome Con in 2015, but we still work closely with Third Eye Comics and Ben (who booked some pretty fantastic celebrity guests for the event this year!)

Super Fun Facts About Awesome Con 2013

  • The badges were printed and assembled by Ben Penrod at his house!

  • The official photographer was Ben’s grandma, Margaret Casey!

  • The creator of Awesome Bot, Paul Petyo, was a guest artist whose designs were used on the official t-shirt and program guide cover. A year later he was hired to work for Awesome Con full time and is still with us to this very day!

  • Paul was also a judge for the first Cosplay Competition! He only agreed to work for the company on the condition that we never asked him judge the contest ever again.

Questions with Lea, one of our first fans!

What was one of your favorite memories from the first Awesome Con in 2013?

Attending our first Awesome Con together as a family — seeing the vendors, taking pictures with the guests and capturing photos of the ever-evolving cosplay.

What sets Awesome Con apart from other conventions?

The variety of activities, celebrities and vendors, as well as the friendly vibe of Awesome Con really impresses me over other conventions. It really feels like “my con”.

For someone who has never been before, how would you sum up Awesome Con in one sentence?

Get ready for a full weekend of fun and surprises!

TROWBACK TO OUR 2013 FLYER AND PROGRAM GUIDE

Paul Petyo designed the original flyer and program guide for Awesome Con 2013! What a talented guy. He’s unable to join us this year (boo!) but we’ll be sure to tell him that you all miss him at the Cosplay Judge’s table.

Questions with Cat, Another of Our OG Fans!

What was one of your favorite memories from Awesome Con?

Truly, my favorite memory from the first Awesome Con was feeling extremely awkward and anxious when I first arrived and leaving like I had found my people. No one I knew, at the time, liked comic books, anime, tabletop, video games and pop culture with the same passion as myself including my husband. By the end of the day, I had made new ‘acquaintance’ that have since become my Awesome Con Family. It’s a family reunion, every year!

What sets Awesome Con apart from other conventions?

Having gone to several Comic Cons since starting with Awesome Con, I have discovered that the show-runners truly care about their con-goers. They reach out to those of us, each year and ask us how can they be better and they listen. Not very many show-runners make that effort.

For someone who has never been before, how would you sum up Awesome Con in one sentence?

From Anime to Cosplay, for all generations, Awesome con is everything you love about pop culture bundled into an incredible weekend filled with new friends, chosen family and memories that will last you a lifetime.
